Before becoming a university lecturer, I spent more than two decades working in computer support. Computers have a way of keeping you humble: just when you think you understand everything, something new breaks — or changes.
Technology kept changing. There was always another system to understand, another problem to solve and another skill to learn.
After years of teaching students, I find myself the student again. These days I’m building AI services, experimenting with local models, servers and software, and learning as I go.
It is a huge learning curve. Some days things work beautifully. Other days, a system that worked yesterday seems determined to test my patience today.
I’ve come to believe that the most useful future for technology is one where it strengthens human ability rather than replacing the human being. Human + Artificial = Augmented Intelligence.
I have qualifications, decades of experience and many stories. But none of those mean I’m finished learning.
We can never stop learning. And I don’t intend to stop now.
